The purpose of this book is not so much to make an intellectual or scholastic contribution to the literature on the Gospel according to St. John, as to afford more directly a help to the spiritual and religious life. Treatises dealing with the subjects presented in this study are innumerable, and the wisdom of adding another book may be questioned, but, as so many others have done, the writer desires, by the grace of God and out of the fulness of his heart, in these days of stress and wavering, to exalt the Lord and Saviour of men, to further the appreciation of the love of our Divine Redeemer, and to strengthen the faith and enlarge and enrich the vision of those who would draw near to God. They who in like manner have sought the same ends, will readily give their welcome to these pages.
