The Rail-Splitter, Vol. 1

Excerpt from The Rail-Splitter, Vol. 1: January, 1917In an interesting way he referred to Professor Langley's experience With the ¿ying machine. From his shrewd oh servation of a bumblebee's ¿ying he deduced the principles of the ¿ying machine, and finally succeeded in making the first heavier-than-air machine. After two men had attempted a ¿ying machine by starting it from a height, Dr. Langley, disappointed by the disaster which attended each effort, reluctantly abandoned the project, and the machine was relegated to a museum. Years afterwards Glenn Curtis saw the machine in the museum, and said to himself, There is no reason in the world why it should not ¿y. Anybody could ¿y that. He took it out and started it from the ground, and made a successful ¿ight. The trouble with a good deal of scholar ship, Dr. Winship said, is that it doesn't keep its feet on its ground.
