The Royal Ryukian Blues

Edwards, Michael D.

The Royal Ryukian Blues

In this riveting memoir, we discover that not everyone drafted during the Vietnam era ended up in the far flung provinces of that war-torn country. Quite a few spent their tour in the happier climes of places like Okinawa. This true story is about a merry band of those lucky devils as told by a newlywed draftee named Mike Edwards.

Early on, Mike delves into the action on Koza City's well-known BC Street where he befriends a bar girl named Mariko, but soon gets drawn into the risky business of dealing marijuana with a wild-child from Colorado named Gary. The next eighteen months finds Mike and his compadres tangled up in one adventure after another, some humorous, others quite harrowing and dramatic as Mike struggles with guilt and fear, knowing that his ultimate mission is to return to his wife unscathed.

Told with honesty and a unique perspective, The Royal Ryukian Blues is an entertaining and enlightening read.

Michael Edwards lives in Catonsville, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. The Royal Ryukian Blues is the third part of his memoir series, which includes The Last of Pea Time, the story of his parents, Morrell Park, which covers Edwards' formative years in Baltimore, this book, and The Word with the Bark on It, which is about his life following Okinawa, up to the present.
