Excerpt from The State of Protestantism in Germany, Described: Being the Substance of Four Discourses Preached Before the University of Cambridge in 1825

The Advertisement to the First Edition which will be found below, will sufficiently explain the circumstances under which the following work first appeared. In the present edition I have consulted my own convenience, and, I trust, that of my readers, by changing the form and order of the work. It is very materially enlarged, and I trust that the new matter will be found to possess great interest, and to substantiate my former statements.

In an earnest desire to avoid farther controversy, I have preferred using the words of others to my own, wherever it was practicable. The reader will accordingly find very considerable extracts from the works of Schrockh, and, in the historical sketch of the earlier state of the German Church, several of some length from the recent work of Mr. Pusey.
