The lady received him with grave politeness, thank ed him for his civility, and easily smoothed down the first roughnesses of new acquaintance. She talked well and sensibly upon various sub jeeta, never referred in the most remote degree to her own state and station, but spoke a good deal of Miss Charlton, and praised her beauty and grace of demeanor with discrimination and delicacy.
