The Struggle for Republican Leadership in Indiana, 1954 (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from The Struggle for Republican Leadership in Indiana, 1954The first indication that the meeting was more than routine came when the newspapermen were barred. The Young Republican leaders also were asked to leave while the committee organized its farm program. A few minutes later the waiting newspapermen were informed that Republican State Chairman Noland Wright had resigned and had been replaced by Paul Cyr of Gary. Wright had been the choice of Governor George Craig for the post, his ejection indicated that the forces allied with Senators Homer E. Capehart and William E. Jenner had determined to shake the governor loose from control of the party organization and take the Republican leader ship into their own hands.Neither Senator Jenner nor Governor Craig discussed the day's events in their speeches to the assembled Young Republicans that evening, but with this episode, January 30, 1954, one of the bitterest struggles for party organization control in recent Indiana political history had begun. Governor Craig did not accept defeat but sought with every means at his disposal to recapture party control.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
