The Surrender of Margaret Bellarmine

Excerpt from The Surrender of Margaret Bellarmine: A Fragment

Ingoldsthorpr is the name of a pleasant village in the heart of rural England, and it is also the name of the great park and stately house belonging to my father, Reginald, Baron Ingoldsthorpe. There is no place in England or out of it that I think I love so well: no place which revives in me so strongly the sense of peace and reverence and exquisite harmony, so rare to find in our hurrying modern days.

I, Margaret Bellarmine, who write these words, am, nevertheless, not old. But sometimes I feel as if I belonged to an older generation-as if I had lost touch with the world I lived in, not because I love it less, but because it has passed me by, as if nothing were left for me but to linger out my life, withering away, like an ungathered rose upon its stalk, unloving, unloved, unblest.
