Excerpt from The Western Journal of Medicine and Surgery, 1846, Vol. 6On the morning of the 17th I amputated the arm by the circular Operation about two inches above the elbow joint. He recovered in a reasonable time without any unfavorable symptoms. The stump was a bad one in consequence of a redundancy of integuments.Case II. - A negro man, 30 years of age, has had a large ulcer of many years' standing, causing swelling of the foot and leg from a short distance below the knee to twice the natural size.
