Nonithsranding the present indulgence of the public for attempts of the following kind, yet I am convinced that for none is an apology more necessary, than for these that are now submitted to its judgment. Perhaps it'will be no excuse that they were written as relaxa tions in the intervals of professional employment, and that they occupied no more of my time, than is usually given to common amusements, for which I had little or no taste.
