Excerpt from Thirty-Ninth Report to the Legislature of Massachusetts Relating to the Registry and Return of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the Commonwealth: For the Year Ending December 31, 1880

In Table 11 the proportion of male births to female is shown to be very constant. It is in excess in all countries, and is par tially compensated for by the greater liability to death. Still births naturally occur oftener in male children, their greater size exposing them to greater dangers, while the proportion of either sex among illegitimate children is, so far as we know, more or less accidental.
