Thomas Jefferson, the first great scholar in American politics, the author of the Declaration of Independence, of the statute for religious freedom in Virginia, and the third President of the United States, was among the first of our statesmen who held these truths to be self-evident: - "That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." First, last, and always, Jefferson believed in the people. To the end of his days he had sublime faith in human nature. "It is my conviction, he wrote, that should things go wrong at any time, the people will set them to rights by the peaceable exercise of their elective rights."
