Itthenoccurredtomothetil'thekidney couldreduceapigrnentwhichwasetillinitsvessels.theorgan, if injected under suficient pressure, mightbeconstrainedtooxcrete anartificialurinethroughthenormalchanneloftheureter.l fotmditpossibletoefiectthis. Oninjectingintothearteryof a sheep's kidney the warm soluble Pruuisn blue and gelatine mixture, Iohtainedfromthecannulatedureterafew drops of an absolutely colourless substance - an artificial urine - which on being treated with hydrogen peroxide at once became blue. The kidney had, then, excreted some gelatine and reduced soluble Prussianblue, provingthatthesesubstanceshadtravelledfromtho bloodcapillariestotheureterandinthepessagehadbeenreduced bythestilllivingrenelepithelium. Butaftcratimeitwasnoticed thattheout¿owfromtheureterhadbecomeblue.thekidneycells hadbecomepoisonedandsonolongerabletocarryontheirvital reduction. Itisnot to besupposod that the living tissuescan with shudformorethanecertaintimetmatmentwithsubstcncu which cannot be other than ultimately toxic for them. In later experimentsferricchloridewasusedwithboththelivsrandkidney inordertodcterminewhethcasubstencedevoidofoxygencould be reduced to the lower form - ferrous chloride - on being per fusedthroughsurvivingorgsns.
