A Grade that includes in right proportion, the studies which make symmetrical growth, is the first essential of a successful school system.

How to establish such a gradation in the largest number of our common schools is the predominant object of every conscientious educator.

There are two great obstacles to making such gradation for all our common schools.

First: Under existing conditions, the necessarily close adherence of teachers to Text-books.

Second: The endless variety of Text-books in use.

There appears to be but one way to overcome these obstacles: that is a course of study in Topics.

We have had a sufficient number of successes in individual schools to indicate what the topics of each grade should be, the order in which they should be studied, and, the average proportion of time that should be given to recitations upon each. (The proportion of time to be given to the study of each topic must depend upon the pupil.)
