Towards Utopia

Excerpt from Towards Utopia: Being Speculations in Social EvolutionWe may perhaps be permitted to observe that we have never yet read Loo/sing Backward, or any other books Of that class, except, some years ago, More's Utopia whilst, with regard to Mr. Morris' Lectures on Art, as we have explained in notes in the body of this work, we had not the pleasure of reading that delightful book until six or eight months after the original drait of this essay was completed.1 In revising it, however, and in rewriting chapters nine and ten, we have taken the opportunity to introduce specifically in several places Mr. Morris' Own term, simplicity, which so thoroly expresses the ideas which had guided us thro'out: and we should perhaps add that the reference at the close Of chapter nine to Love. In a Cot was the outcome of a train Of re¿ections that had been started, partly by Mr. Morris' book, and partly by studies of Greek life. It were clearly super ¿uons to express in detail our acknowledgments, in this work also, to Herbert Spencer, for the general conceptions of social evolution that we have derived from his Study of Sociology, his Data of Ethics, and his political and social essays.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
