III and IV, 1866When a well adapted splint is on the teeth and gum, the other parts around the bone are, to a great extent, a counter support to the splint. Thus the broken jaw, together with any teeth loosened by the injury, is held securely in place, until the fractured bone is reunited and the teeth become firm. Mean while the motions of the jaw are in most cases unrestricted and the cheeks and lips always left free.The best time to commence fitting a splint is immediately after the injury, if the condition of the patient Will allow.
