Excerpt from Two Months in a London Hospital: Its Inner Life and Scenes: A Personal Narrative

The origin of this little work is noticed in its introductory chapter. The fact of its having been produced, and subsequently arranged for the press, during my convalescence, will account for the desultory way in which the subject is treated. Were I at the present time, with the same materials at my command, to sit down to write a similar narrative, I should probably arrange and treat the subject differently, but I doubt whether the resulting work would possess equal interest to the present one. The advantages of orderly arrangement and precision possessed by the one, would be more than counterbalanced by the freshness, familiar style, and diversified character of the other. Besides this, many of the scenes, details, and remarks, crowded into the following pages, and which, I trust, will prove new and interesting to the majority of my readers, could not have been well introduced into a formal written narrative.
