Excerpt from Typhoid Fever: Its Cause and Prevention
The word typhoid means a stupor-like fever. The disease was clearly separated from typhus fever, a disease which resembles it somewhat, in the forties Of the last century. This latter disease, typhus fever, is now almost extinct. The cause of typhoid fever is a small germ called the typhoid germ or bacillus typhosus. This germ was discovered by Eberth in 1880.
