That they have been made into a book at all is due to the insistence of friends of the author, and contrary to his own judgment. The volume is not published in the technical or trade signification of that term, but, as will be seen on the title-page, is privately printed, being intended solely for the behoof of the friends to whose partiality it owes its existence, and to gratify their expressed desire to preserve in permanent form verses which have met their approbation.
