The Cote de Lumiere in the Departement Vendee is the part of the French Atlantic coast with the most hours of sunshine. Sandy beaches and rocky coastal sections alternate. In flat areas behind the coastline, where seawater enters at high tide, there are salt evaporation ponds where salt is extracted from the water in the traditional way. Some old windmills are still preserved and of course there are several lighthouses along this stretch of coast.
