In 1890 the life of the small provincial city had become too narrow for the expanding spirit of the young journal ist, the lack of energy and initiative in the republican party fretted the ardent rebel, while the enmity of the monarchical government made it doubly desirable for him to seek a foreign residence. Impelled by his great admira tion for France and French literature, he went to Paris for a short stay, but was soon drawn back to Spain by events there. In 1892 he distinguished himself as one of the leaders in the protest against the cruelties of the gov ernment administration in Cuba, he was obliged to ¿ee to Italy, but returned to suffer two years' imprisonment.
