Viva La Revolucian

A companion catalogue for Viva la Revolución: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape. The last decade has seen the rise of artists who have rejected academia and embraced youth and urban culture as their inspiration - instead of idyllic settings, these artists are inspired by the buldings, vehicles, people, and advertisements of the city. This show represents the pinnacle of this progression through an epic converbence of 20 artists from around the world. Here, the urban landscape serves not only as the inspiration, but also the canvas in an exhibition comprised of four parts: work inside the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), Public Commissions and Interventions, Bombing, and a Collaborative Site. Dzine, Barry McGee, Moris, Banksy, Ryan McGinness, Mark Bradford, William Cordova, Dr. Lakra, Swoon, Os Gemoes and others contribute paintings, sculpture, wall drawings, murals, and installations in MCASD. Outside, Invader and Shepard Fairey install large-scale murals while Dzine embellishes the city with tricked out pedicabs. Throughout the city, artists bomb abandoned buildings with uncommissioned works, and gather in a collective site to create and install ephemeral work, where their art will engage with that of local artists. Includes essays by curator Pedro Alonzo and Alex Baker, and a preface by Hugh M. Davies.
