Walker, William Sylvester

What Lay Beneath

Excerpt from What Lay Beneath: A Story of the Queensland Bush

The Times says: - "This is a story by a popular Australian writer of adventure in the bush, mine prospecting, aboriginal customs, and the dealing of black with white. It is a curious, out-of-the-way kind of tale, spread over a good many years, and of interest."

The Scotsman says: - "From a memory richly stored with reminiscences of Australia, Mr. Walker has garnered many of the incidents in this tale of the Northern Territory. He gives faithful pictures of the existence of the old-time settlers and the natives, and the descriptions of the country have in them a certain poetic charm."

The Age (Melbourne) says: - "The book leaves no room for doubt as to the fertility of the authors brain in ideas, for it is full of romantic incidents. The story is entertaining."

The Yorkshire Post says: - "A bright and stirring study of adventure in the bush and coast life in the northern territory of Australia as a reminiscence of his early pioneering days. Incidentally he assures his readers that Australia is still calling for men of pluck and industry who are willing to work... It will please the readers of romantic fiction."

The North Devon Chronicle, in a half-column review, says: - "Mr. Walker has evidently a deep acquaintance with the tribal customs of his native country, and this knowledge he supplements with a fertile imagination, the result being a procession of weird and mysterious objects and incidents, blood-curdling to their witnesses, but subsequently explained upon perfectly natural grounds... The work is true to Nature, and gives no idea of straining after effect."

The Glasgow News says: - "It is full of wild adventures in the Australian bush, secret caves, savage blacks, an unknown country surrounded by a waterless desert and impenetrable forest, and, in short, everything that goes to make the average boy happy in his fiction."

The Northern Whig (Daily) says: - "Holds the reader's interest through many curious scenes and side issues... the book is capitally written...The author takes his readers into an entirely new world - both above ground and below.
