In venturing to submit the following pages for your consideration, I am particularly anxious to obtain the attention of those among you who concur in the opinion that "posterity" has some claims upon us, or that we have some duties to perform to "posterity" besides those generally thought of.

It has been contended, with great force, that we are not justified in imposing upon our children and children's children the burthen of a Debt principally contracted by our fathers and grandfathers, and that the least we can do is to make arrangements for progressively diminishing the amount, while rigidly abstaining from making additions to it.
