Jonny Fanthom sits on a wooden bench in a cemetery with his memories, trying to make sense of life, love and luck. His thoughts take him back to Whitecotton Road, where he spent his childhood in a world of poverty and strife.

As an adolescent he was a Jack the Lad who would do anything for "a laugh and a bit of fun". He hated the discipline of school and was a rebellious youth. How, then, does he shake off his "bad boy" reputation and become a husband and father? Is it luck or love or both?

Time passes and he moves on. He meets Foxy, his dream woman. Lady Luck was once again truly on his side - but luck indeed is a "very fickle thing". And when it runs out, your memories may be all that's left.
