Windsor Davies

Windsor Davies, born on 28th August 1930, Canning Town, Essex, London, England, UK, was an actor who appeared in many movies and TV shows from 1964 to 2004. Between 1974 - 1981 he played the part of Battery Sergeant Major Williams in the sitcom It Ain't Half Hot Mum. His deep, Welsh-accented voice was heard extensively in commercial voice-overs.

Windsor had Welsh parents, who returned to their native village of Nant-y-Moel, in the Ogmore Valley, near Bridgend, during 1940. Davies studied at Ogmore Grammar School and Bangor Teacher Training College, having worked as a coal miner for 4 years then as a teacher for 6 years, at Mountside School for Boys in Leek, Staffordshire. After his national service in Libya and Egypt with the East Surrey Regiment from 1950-1952, Windsor decided that he wanted to become an actor. He married Eluned Lynne Evans during 1957, who died in September 2018, the couple having had 5 children.

Davies' best known role was as Battery Sergeant Major Williams in the British sitcom It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974-1981). Among his catchphrases was "Shut Up!!", delivered as an eardrum-shattering military scream, another having been "Oh dear, how sad, never mind", delivered in a dry, ironic manner. Windsor had a UK chart-topper with a semi-comic version of "Whispering Grass" during 1975, with co-star Don Estelle.

His other TV roles included the sailor Taffy in the first of the BBC-series The Onedin Line (1971), a special branch detective in Callan (1972) then the antique dealer Oliver Smallbridge in Never the Twain (1981-1991), with Donald Sinden. Davies appeared in the Doctor Who story The Evil of the Daleks as Toby, during 1967 then was the voice of Sergeant Major Zero, a spherical robotic soldier in charge of 100 other spherical robotic soldiers, in the 1983 Gerry Anderson/Christopher Burr production Terrahawks. Windsor was the subject of This Is Your Life during 1976, when he was surprised by Eamonn Andrews.
