Tod, Jenseits, Unsterblichkeit und Religionsentwicklung bilden zentrale Themen aller Disziplinen, die sich kulturell und biologisch mit dem Menschen befassen. Eng verknüpft damit ist die Frage nach der "Seele". Für neue Impulse und Deutungsansätze wurden zwei Kolloquien veranstaltet, eines zu "Bios - Cultus - Religio" und dem Zusammenhang von biologischer Bedingtheit und kulturell-religiöser Evolution, eines zu "Psyche - Thanatos - Immortalitas" im Hinblick auf Tod, Jenseitserwartung und Unsterblichkeit vom Paläolithikum bis in die Moderne. Die Beiträge behandeln die Menschwerdung, paläolithische Befunde zu Religion, die Eiszeitkunst, die Evolution von Religion, Jenseits und Unsterblichkeit im Alten Ägypten, bronzezeitliche Opferplätze / Opferplatz, das altbabylonische Menschenbild, altmesopotamische Opfer, Bestattung und Nachleben der Könige von Ugarit, archäologische Betrachtungen zu Opfern, die Sprachgeschichte von psyche, Unsterblichkeit in der antiken biblischen Tradition, Todesvorstellungen der römischen Antike, den Auferstehungsglauben Thomas von Aquins, Neurowissenschaftliches zu Psyche, Geist und Bewusstsein, Unsterblichkeit aus biomedizinischer Sicht und Nahtoderfahrungen.

Death, afterlife, immortality, and the development of religions are central topics of all disciplines dealing with man from a cultural and biological point of view. Closely connected to this is the question of the "soul". For new incentives and approaches, two colloquia were held, one on "Bios - Cultus - Religio" and the connection between biological conditionality and cultural-religious evolution and one on "Psyche - Thanatos - Immortalitas" with regard to death, expectation of an afterlife, and immortality from the Palaeolithic until Modern Times. The contributions deal with the evolution of man, Palaeolithic evidence of religion, Ice Age art, the evolution of religion, afterlife and immortality in Ancient Egypt, Bronze Age offering sites, the Ancient Babylonian idea of man, Ancient Mesopotamian sacrifices, burial and afterlife of the kings of Ugarit, archaeological thoughts on sacrifices, the linguistic history of psyche, immortality in the biblical tradition of Antiquity, concepts of death in Roman Antiquity, the belief in resurrection in Thomas Aquinas' writings, neuro-scientific results on psyche, intellect, and consciousness, immortality from the view point of bio-medicine, and near-death experiences.
