LE titre de ce roman paraîtra peut-être ambitieux z je le trouve tel moi-même, mais je l'ai laissé subsister, faute d'en pou voir imaginer un autre qui rendît aussi exactement l'idée fondamentale du livre. C'est bien réellement la barbarie et la ci vilisation aux prises l'une avec l'autre que j'ai voulu peindre. S'il y a quelque autre chose dans mon ouvrage, ce n'est que par M hasard et comme accessoire. Ainsi ce n'est o pas au titre que l'on doit faire le reproche d'être trop vaste ou tr0p élevé c'est tout au plus au sujet.
