L'extrémité sud-ouest de la Sicile et le cap Bon_limitent le détroit qui relie les deux bassins de la Méditerranée. Entre ce cap et le Ras Sidi Ali él Mekki', la côte africaine 's'échancre largement. C'est le golfe qui, pendant trente siècles d'histoire, a été témoin de la fortune d'utique, de Carthage et de Tunis. Un éperon, le cap Carthage, le divise en deux parties, dont l'une, celle que termine au Nord le Ras Sidi Ali, el Mekki, a été fort diminuée depuis l'époque punique par les alluvions de la Medjerda.
