Les dix-sept vers que nous avons reproduits d'après M. E. Stengel renferment tout ce que l'on sait actuellement de la forme primitive de l'histoire traditionnelle de Huon. Il convient donc de les étudier de près pour essayer de déterminer l'époque à laquelle vivait le personnage réel du nom de Hugues (hugo) dont la tradition s'est emparée pour en faire le héros d'un poème épique.
